CLIMBING ON KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO

Duration:   12 days. (from July, 15 until September, 5)

Kluchevskoy Volcano     One of the most thrilling routs runs to Klyuchevskoy volcano (4750 m) - the highest active volcano in Europe and Asia. It is characterized by great efficiency. Average rate of magmatic substance evacuation forms a half of all products of eruptions in Kuril- Kamchatka region. Lava is erupted both from the top crater and on its slopes. There are more than 90 slag cones, lateral craters and erosive cirques on the slopes of this volcano. From 1945 the volcanic top is splitted by volcanic- tectonic grooves that cut the body of the volcano up to the marks of 2500- 3000 m in three places. Climbing the top of Klyuchevskoy volcano and study of volcanic processes in the crater and on the slopes present great scientific interest. For mountaineers to make an ascent of the volcanic top is considered to be prestigious.
    We organize such a climbing for those people who have no special training and equipment.

    The climbing takes one day. The rest of the time is occupied by the preparation for the climbing and adaptation at the glacier.

Frequently Asked Questions on Climbing How will we get to Klyuchevskoy volcano?
We'll go from Esso village to the volcanologists' camping located at the altitude of 3200 m. by helicopter.

Where will we stay?
Tourists will stay in large warm tents accommodated with iron stoves - 5 people in one tent. Tourists will sleep on wooden sheets in sleeping bags.

What kind of nourishment will we have?
There will be breakfast, lunch and dinner organized in the camp. A professional cook will prepare meals using only fresh food products.

What should I take with me to climb the Klyuchevskoy volcano?
A tourist should have mountain boots or trekking boots, a warm coat, warm gloves, a ski cap, sunglasses, a sleeping bag and a backpack.

What would we do if a helicopter could not come for a long time because of bad weather conditions?
Tourists will descend to the house of volcanologists (5 hours) and go to Esso by a vehicle.

Climbing on Klyuchevskoy Volcano (Route No.9)

Day 1: Arrival. Breakfast at a cafe in the town Yelizovo. Drive to the settlement Milkovo (6 hours). Lunch at a cafe in Milkovo. Scenic drive to the village Kozyrevsk (4 hours). Supper and overnight at a tent in Kozyrevsk.
Day 2: Fly (1 hour) by helicopter to the Shmidt Glacier (elevation 3200 m). Camping. Overnight in the stove - heated tents.
Day 3: Reserve day. Acclimatization. Visiting the lava flow of the fissure eruption of 1988.
Day 4: Reserve day. Acclimatization. Excursion to the frozen cliffs at 4100 m elevation.
Day 5: Reserve day. Acclimatization. Excursion to the cliff formations of Kamen (Stone) Volcano. Training on climbing irons.
Day 6: Climbing the crater of Kluchevskoy Volcano (7 - 9 hours). Return to the base camp.
Day 7: Hike (8 hours) over the Erman glacier. Pass between Kluchevskoy and Ushkovsky Volcanoes to the Institute of Volcanology's expedition camp. Here is a grand view of three volcanoes. Overnight in sleeping bags.
Day 8: Drive to the settlement Kosyrevsk and further to Milkovo and to Malki. Swimming in the hot pool. Overnight in cottages.
Day 9: Breakfast. Scenic drive to the settlement Milkovo (4 hours). Lunch at a cafe in Milkovo. Return trip to Petropavlovsk (6 hours). Accommodation at a hotel.
Day 10: Downtown excursion. Visiting the Institute of Volcanology Museum and the Kamchatka Regional Museum. Lunch at a cafe. Friend's supper at the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 11: Breakfast at hotel. Departure to airport.

Day 11: Rafting down the Bystraya River to the settlement Karymai. Lunch. Fishing. Prepare the rafts for loading. Load equipment into the buses. Overnight in tents.
Day 12: Breakfast. Scenic drive to the settlement Apacha (1 hour). Swimming in the hot pool. Lunch. Return trip to Petropavlovsk (2 hours). Accommodation at a hotel.
Day 13: Sea voyage by the ship (8 hours). Departure to the hotel at 18 p.m. Overnight at the hotel.

Volcano Avachinsky Hill
    The volcano Avachinsky Hill (2741 m) is located 30 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The elevation of the volcano is 2741 meters above sea level. The last eruption occurred in 1991. Climbing to the crater will take 6 - 7 hours. From the top of the volcano You will see an unforgettable view of Nalychevo Valley and Avacha Bay. A traveler catches a breathtaking glance at the town of Petropavlovsk and its vicinity as well. The lunch on the lava flow will surely taste better than in Your own kitchen. The way down will take three hours.

Excursion to the Top of Active Avacha Volcano (Route No.4)

Day 1: Meeting at the airport. Drive to the Avacha Mountain Rescuers Base (4 hours). Lunch. Hike to Verblud (Camel) Mountain. Free time. Supper. Overnight in sleeping bags in a bunkhouse.
Day 2: Breakfast at 7 o'clock. Climb to the top of Avacha Volcano (7 hours). Lunch on the way. Return to the volcanologists' base camp. Supper. Trip to town. Accommodation and dinner at a hotel.

JOURNEY TO VOLCANO TOLBACHIK (3085 m)

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - village Kozyrevsk - the seismic observatory "Vodopadnaya" -
Volcano Plosky Tolbachik - New Tolbachik

Duration:   7 days. (July, 10 - September, 15)

Volcano Tolbachik     The volcanoes Plosky Tolbachik (3085 m) and Ostry Tolbachik (3682 m) are located at the southern end of the Klyuchevskoy volcano group. Excursion to Plosky Tolbachik and to the eruption of the Tolbachik Volcano (1975 -1976 eruption) is made by a truck from the village Kozyrevsk to the seismic observatory Vodopadnaya, located at the height of 800 m on the volcano slope. The path to the top of the Volcano runs through the lava flow and bomb field formed in 1941 during side eruption of Plosky Tolbachik. You will be amazed by the view of moon landscapes - these are the areas of modern volcanism. And by the way, it is exactly here, where the first lunar rover was tested by Russian scientists. The area of Tolbachik was chosen for its incredible similarity with the Moon landscape. Volcanologists will share with great pleasure their knowledge about Tolbachik Volcanoes` eruptions, their post-volcanic activity and products of volcanic eruptions.
